Heartbreaking Case: Couple Arrested for Selling Their Eight-Month-Old Infant in West Bengal
A heart-wrenching incident has come to light in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, where a couple stands accused of selling their eight-month-old baby. The shocking news emerged after local residents noticed the couple’s sudden prosperity and reported their suspicions to the police.
The couple, identified as Jaydev Ghosh and Sathi, were taken into police custody after their neighbours raised concerns about their unusual behaviour. The residents became suspicious when they saw the couple in possession of a brand new mobile phone, which seemed unusual given their financial situation.
According to locals, Jaydev and Sathi, who already have a daughter, embarked on a trip across the state for their honeymoon. They visited various places, including the scenic Digha and Mandarmani sea beaches. However, the incident did not come to light until Sunday, despite occurring at least one and a half months earlier. The police investigation revealed that the couple had allegedly sold their infant for a sum of Rs 2 lakh.
Laxmi Kundu, a neighbour of the couple, shared her account with a leading news platform, stating that the couple used the money to finance their honeymoon and even bought a new mobile phone. She further alleged that Sathi would bring other individuals to their house, insinuating that the couple might have sold their baby to fund their drug habits.
Following the arrests, the police also apprehended another woman, Priyanka Ghosh, who is suspected to be involved in the sale of the infant. However, Priyanka has not yet divulged any details related to the incident.
Kamai Chowdhury, Jaydev’s father, expressed his distress upon learning about the incident. He claimed to have initially believed that the baby had been sent to her maternal uncle’s house. However, he later discovered that the baby had been sold. Kamai Chowdhury also accused his son and daughter-in-law of subjecting him to mental and physical abuse, leading him to file a formal complaint against them.
The shocking incident has left the community deeply saddened, and even a local TMC councillor, Tarok Guha, expressed his shock and concern. He reported that Jaydev had been behaving erratically, demanding his daughter back while seemingly intoxicated. Worried about the situation, Tarok Guha rushed to the couple’s house to confront Jaydev about his behaviour. It was then that he heard about the alleged sale of the baby. The TMC councillor confirmed that the baby had not been seen for several days.
Child trafficking and child exploitation are serious issues that require urgent attention and stringent action. Such incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the rights and welfare of children. It is essential for society to come together to protect vulnerable children and ensure their safety and well-being.
As the investigation unfolds, the authorities must ensure that justice is served and that the guilty parties face appropriate legal consequences for their actions. The case also underscores the need for greater awareness and support for mental health issues and substance abuse, as they can have devastating consequences on individuals and their families. Let this tragic incident serve as a wake-up call for society to prioritize the protection and care of its most vulnerable members, especially children.
