India Rankings 2023 :Delhi maintains dominance in top colleges as other metros showcase their best

Delhi maintained its dominance in having highest number of top colleges for higher education with five out top ten being from the capital alone in latest ranking of best colleges and universities for higher education in India.

Miranda House again came with flying colours as best college for studying, retaining  its top position for the seventh time in among top ten India Rankings 2023.

This was followed by Hindu College, Delhi; Presidency College, Chennai; PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore; St. Xavier`s College, Kolkata; Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm College, Delhi; Loyola College, Chennai; Rama Krishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College, Kolkata; Kirori Mal College, Delhi; and Lady Shri Ram College For Women, Delhi.

IITs continue to dominate the chart in Overall Performance category grabbing 7 out of 10 positions in top ten. The remaining go to AIIMS, JNU and IISc Bangalore.

The ranking is decided as per parameters laid out by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the of Ministry of Education. This is the eighth consecutive edition of India Rankings of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in India.

“India Rankings have served as a valuable tool for students in selecting universities based on their relative standing in various categories and subject domain among higher educational institutions in the country,”  the Minister of State for Education Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh said, releasing the ranking at an event attended by academicians, vice chancellors and directors of institutions of higher education.

“It has also helped universities in identifying areas for improvement in teaching, research, resources, and infrastructure. Multi-dimensional parameters of India Rankings have successfully captured the quality and excellence of higher educational institutions in India,” the minister added.

Key Highlights of India Rankings 2023
IIT Madras retains its 1st position in Overall Category for fifth consecutive year since 2019
IIT Madras retains its 1st position in Engineering for eighth consecutive year since 2016 
IIT Roorkee stands at 1st position in Architecture for third consecutive year since 2021
IIT Kanpur tops in Innovation category
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore tops the Universities category for eighth consecutive years, since 2016
IISc Bangalore stood first in Research Institutions category for third consecutive year since 2021
IIM Ahmedabad tops in Management subject, retaining its first position for fourth consecutive year since 2020
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, occupies the top slot in Medical Sciences for the sixth consecutive year since 2018
However, AIIMS ranked 6th in Overall Performance category, improving from 9th in 2022
National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Hyderabad, tops the ranking in Pharmacy for first time, pushing Jamia Hamdard to the second slot after the latter retained top position from 2019 to 2022.

National Law School of India University, Bangalore, retains its first position in Law for the 6th consecutive year since 2018
Colleges in Delhi maintained their dominance in ranking of Colleges with five colleges out of first 10 colleges from Delhi.
Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai, takes the top slot for Dental Sciences for the 2nd consecutive year
Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, takes the top slot in Agriculture and Allied Sectors.  

Total number of Higher Education Institutions that participated in the ranking exercise in various categories and subject domains have increased from 3565 in 2016 to 8686 in 2023. Number of categories and subject domains have increased from 4 in 2016 to 13 in 2023. Ranking started in 2016 with only Engineering, Management and Pharmacy institutions. Over time, Architecture & Planning, Medical, Law, Dental and Agriculture have been added.

The ranking exercise for the year 2023 continues with the practice of providing a common “Overall” rank in addition to a separate rank for Universities, Research Institutions, Degree Colleges, and discipline-specific ranks in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, and Dental Science. Architecture & Planning. Agriculture & Allied Sectors and Innovation are two verticals added to the ranking exercise from 2023 onwards.

India Rankings continues to be a colossal and an arduous exercise involving experts with in-depth knowledge of higher education system in India, nuances of bibliometric & citation analysis, new trends and advances in data science and data crunching.
