Indian Navy submarine strikes a fishing boat off the coast of Goa, leaving two fishermen missing
About 70 nautical miles off the coast of Goa, a fishing boat and an Indian Navy submarine collided Thursday night, sparking a massive search and rescue effort to find two crew members who went missing, according to news agency
“An Indian fishing vessel Marthoma with a crew of 13 reportedly collided with an Indian Naval unit on November 21 about 70 nm North West of Goa,” an Indian Navy spokesperson said.
Eleven crew members were saved, and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai was consulted throughout the search for the two crew members who went missing. A high-level investigation into the issue has been authorized by the Navy.
Additional resources, including those from the Coast Guard, were being mobilized and diverted to the scene of the incident to aid in the rescue attempts, according to a Navy official.During the rescue effort, the Navy sent out six ships and an unspecified number of surveillance planes.
A Scorpene class submarine, an essential component of India’s naval power, collided with the fishing boat. These submarines can perform a variety of tasks, such as anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence collection, mine laying, and area surveillance. It is a lethal and accurate weapon because of its excellent stealth tactics and low noise levels.
Investigations are underway to determine what caused the submarine and fishing vessel to collide. The status of the ship and the condition of the two surviving crew members have not been disclosed by the Indian Navy. Off the coast of Tamil Nadu, in August of this year, a fishing boat and a Sri Lankan naval warship collided, resulting in the death of one fisherman.
