Unfortunately, there is currently more Indian attention on the nomination of a new army chief in Pakistan than there is interest in the much more important changes taking place further west. The anti-regime demonstrations in Iran and Mohammed bin Salman’s social and economic reforms in Saudi Arabia suggest that our western periphery may need to be reorganized. Of course, our mental space is dominated by the ongoing conflict with our neighbor to the west. It also obscures the fact that Pakistan hasn’t actually served as the Subcontinent’s western march’s fulcrum. Outsiders have frequently used Pakistan as a useful tool, and Afghanistan has long been the scene of conflict. However, they lack the power to redraw our western frontiers. Saudi Arabia and Iran do.
