After failing his final exam, a law student has sued OP Jindal Global University for allegedly employing artificial intelligence (AI) to solve the test’s questions.
A report claims that Kaustubh Shakkarwar, a student at the Jindal Global Law School pursuing a Masters of Law (LLM) in Intellectual Property and Technology Laws, has refuted the claim that he employed artificial intelligence (AI)-generated responses.
Shakkarwar claimed in his appeal that on May 18, he took the final test for the course “Law and Justice in the Globalising World.” The Unfair Means Committee informed him on June 25 that he failed the subject because his responses were “88% AI-generated.”
The committee’s verdict was later affirmed by the Controller of Examinations as well. Shakkarwar, a former researcher for the Chief Justice of India, has recently dismissed the claims of AI use in an appeal to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court has scheduled a hearing on November 14 and requested that OP Jindal Global University reply to the student’s petition.
Shakkarwar, who operates a litigation-related AI platform, claimed in his petition that his responses were unique and devoid of any usage of artificial intelligence capabilities. Additionally, he claimed that the university had not published any clear policies regarding the use of AI and contended that, because AI is merely a tool, plagiarism can only be shown in cases where copyright has been violated.
“The university is silent to state that use of AI would amount to ‘plagiarism’ and thus, the petitioner cannot be prosecuted for what is not explicitly prohibited,” the petition read.
He also alleged that the university had failed to offer an “iota of evidence” to support their allegations against him.
