India’s space aspirations have made a notable advance with the start of building the nation’s second spaceport in Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu. The ceremony for breaking ground signified the start of a new phase in India’s efforts in space exploration.
This spaceport is specifically built to facilitate Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) missions, with the goal of seizing a significant portion of the international market for launching small satellites up to 500 kg. The SSLV Launch Complex in Kulasekarapattinam will include essential facilities such as the Upper Stage Assembly Facilities (UAF-I & UAF-II) for organizing the second and third stages of the SSLV, in addition to a Launch Service Building (LSB).
These facilities will facilitate the effective preparation and launch of SSLVs, which are currently in the operational stage and are planned to be manufactured by Indian industries. The advantageous positioning of Kulasekarapattinam provides geographical benefits, especially for polar launches.
In contrast to launches from Sriharikota that necessitate a fuel-demanding “dogleg maneuver” to steer clear of Sri Lanka, the new spaceport enables a direct southern path, greatly lowering fuel use and enhancing payload capacity.
On February 28, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the foundation stone for the complex, signaling the start of site development efforts. The completion of the spaceport is anticipated by the conclusion of 2026, with an estimated expenditure of around Rs 950 crore.
This effort demonstrates India’s dedication to growing its space infrastructure and improving its abilities in the worldwide satellite launch industry.
