The Aditya Sarpotdar-directed film ‘Munjya’ has become a surprise box office success story, grossing over Rs 100 crore worldwide. However, its journey to reach this milestone in India remains ongoing. In an interview with India Today, director Aditya Sarpotdar expressed optimism about ‘Munjya’ achieving the Rs 100 crore mark in India, despite the formidable competition from the grand release of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’.

Starring Sharvari Wagh, Mona Singh, and Abhay Verma, ‘Munjya’ started modestly at the box office but gained momentum through positive word-of-mouth on social media. Sarpotdar attributed this grassroots support as the film’s greatest asset, highlighting its grounded narrative that resonated well with audiences.

Acknowledging the mammoth scale of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, headlined by Prabhas, Sarpotdar described it as a massive film that would undoubtedly pose challenges for ‘Munjya’. Despite this, he remained confident in the sustained appeal of ‘Munjya’ beyond the initial buzz of ‘Kalki’. Sarpotdar emphasized that while ‘Kalki’ might enjoy a strong opening due to its star power and novel genre blending science-fiction with Indian mythology, ‘Munjya’ has the potential to maintain steady box office performance through positive audience feedback.

As of Wednesday, ‘Munjya’ had garnered Rs 89 crore nett in India. Sarpotdar expressed confidence in the film crossing the Rs 100 crore nett mark, anticipating an additional Rs 11 crore despite the competitive release of ‘Kalki’ the following day.

‘Kalki 2898 AD’, directed by Nag Ashwin, has generated substantial pre-release buzz with solid advance ticket sales. The film’s unique blend of genres has struck a chord with audiences, projecting an opening gross of Rs 180-200 crore worldwide. This strong performance expectation poses a challenge not only to ‘Munjya’ but also to other concurrent releases like ‘Chandu Champion’.

In conclusion, while ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ sets the stage for box office dominance with its star appeal and innovative storytelling, ‘Munjya’ remains a contender in the race, banking on its steady performance driven by audience appreciation and positive reviews. As the battle unfolds at the box office, both films strive to leave a lasting impression on cinema-goers amid the competitive landscape of Indian cinema.
