Muslim Couple Remarries On Women’s Day To Ensure The Financial Security Of Their Children
On International Women’s Day, a Muslim couple from Kerala’s Kasaragod region remarried, but this time under the Special Marriage Act to guarantee their daughters’ financial stability. On social media, people have both praised and criticized them for the action.
The pair was remarried on March 8 morning at a Sub-registrar’s office in Kanhangad, Hosdurg Taluk, Kasaragod District. Their original wedding took place on October 6, 1994.
In the movie “Nna Thaan Case Kodu” (Sue me then), starring Kunchacko Boban, attorney, and actor C Shukkur played a lawyer. On March 8, he wedded his wife Sheena, a former pro-vice chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University. All three of their daughters were present to observe they’re happy remarriage under the Special Marriage Act (SMA).
The couple’s choice, in the opinion of a well-known Sunni higher education institution in Kerala, was an effort to disrespect Islamic law and Muslim personal law.
It claimed that Shukkur’s remarriage was a drama and evidence of narrow-minded thinking because it denied his siblings the right to inherit a third of his property after his passing.
The couple chose to remarry under the SMA because daughters only receive two-thirds of their father’s property under Muslim personal laws, which also control the inheritance of property, and the remaining portion passes to the father’s brothers in the absence of a male heir.
The educational institution believed that every believer would vehemently disagree with the couple’s choice, but Shukkur responded to it on his Facebook page by saying that the organization would be liable for any physical attacks he endures from people who misunderstand what the term oppose means.
He added that there was no need for strong opposition because his choice was not intended to offend anyone’s religious convictions or undermine believers’ faith.
He also hoped that the police, who were in charge of enforcing the law, were listening to such comments.
Social media users congratulated the couple for their choice, and well-known Indian film sound designer Resul Pookutty called it an eye opener for every liberal Muslim in this nation.
