Portugal has had promises of assistance from its European allies in fighting forest fires that have claimed two lives, according to officials. Due to high temperatures and strong winds, the nation was put on alert from Saturday to Tuesday evening. Approximately 5,000 firemen battled 26 fires on Monday.
The country’s civil protection administration reports that a series of fires that started over the weekend in the northern Aveiro region had caused roughly 70 residents to evacuate and injured 12 firemen, including two critically.According to Lusa News Agency, authorities reported that a 28-year-old Brazilian employee of a forestry agency perished after becoming entangled in the flames while attempting to recover tools.
According to the interior ministry, a volunteer fireman passed away during a break from what appeared to be a heart attack. In addition to burning homes, the fires have stopped traffic on multiple roadways. The range of danger ratings is “very high” to “highest.”
So far this year, Portugal has experienced fewer wildfires than usual.By the end of August, the fire had destroyed about 10,300 hectares (25,500 acres), which is about one-third of what had been destroyed the previous year and seven times less than the average over the previous ten years.Since terrible blazes in 2017 claimed hundreds of lives, Lisbon has doubled the budget for fighting wildfires and increased money for fire prevention tenfold.
