By Agnibeena Ghosh

In late October, the world mourned the loss of a remarkable figure in the field of climate science and advocacy. Professor Saleemul Huq, a renowned Bangladeshi scientist, breathed his last on October 28. Tributes poured in from all corners of the globe for a man whose life’s work left an indelible mark on climate research, activism, and the pursuit of climate justice.

Huq, who was 71 at the time of his passing, was not just an acclaimed academic but also a relentless climate activist. His contributions to the study of climate change and its impacts were invaluable. Furthermore, he held the esteemed position of Director of the International Centre for Climate Change & Development (ICCCAD), a research and capacity-building organization based in Bangladesh. His impact extended beyond the borders of his homeland, influencing climate discussions and policy on a global scale.

Shahab Uddin, the Bangladeshi Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, expressed the nation’s profound grief, describing Huq’s death as an irreparable loss to both Bangladesh and the rest of the world. Such sentiments were echoed worldwide as news of his passing spread.

In a touching display of respect and remembrance, hundreds gathered at the Gulshan Society Mosque in Dhaka on a Sunday afternoon to pay their last respects. Additionally, during the Sunday’s pre-Cop G77 meeting in Abu Dhabi, a minute’s silence was observed in his memory. The global community came together to honor a man who had dedicated his life to combating climate change.

One of the many individuals profoundly influenced by Professor Saleemul Huq was Vanessa Nakate, a climate activist from Uganda. Nakate shared her privileged experiences of working alongside Huq over the years. She highlighted his unwavering commitment to the cause, saying, “As well as fighting for those most vulnerable, Huq was incredibly generous with his time.” She recounted an incident from Cop26 when she needed an expert to speak alongside her during a significant media interview on loss and damage. Without hesitation, Huq dropped what he was doing and walked across the conference center in Glasgow to join her.

Mohamed Adow, the Director of the energy and climate think-tank Power Shift Africa, took to social media to praise Huq, describing him as a “titan of the climate movement.” He emphasized the significance of a Bangladeshi scientist like Huq speaking with authority and insight on the global stage. In a field often dominated by scientists from Europe and North America, Professor Huq stood out as a global influencer.

Among his many accolades, Huq was awarded an OBE in 2022. He held the position of a professor at the Independent University, Bangladesh, was a senior associate of the International Institute on Environment and Development, and was part of the Cop28 advisory committee. His contributions as a prolific writer and researcher were exceptional. He was also among the lead authors for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) third, fourth, and fifth assessments of the global climate. In 2022, the prestigious journal Nature recognized Huq as one of the top 10 scientists in the world, cementing his status as a trailblazer in climate science.

A defining characteristic of Professor Saleemul Huq was his advocacy for the involvement of young people in global climate negotiations. He believed that the younger generation, who are currently experiencing the consequences of climate change, must have a say in shaping the solutions. He famously stated, “Our generation created the mess and their generation is suffering. Hence, they must have a say.” This commitment to youth engagement resonated with many, inspiring them to take an active role in addressing the climate crisis.

Sohanur Rahman, a Bangladeshi climate advocate, captured the sentiment of many when he described Huq as a “true visionary and climate champion.” Huq’s legacy will continue to shine as an example for years and generations to come. His tireless efforts in the fight against climate injustice will serve as a perpetual source of inspiration for all those committed to building a more sustainable and just world.

In the wake of Professor Saleemul Huq’s passing, the world has not only lost a distinguished scientist but also a passionate advocate for climate justice. His life’s work, dedication, and the profound impact he made on the global climate movement will continue to shape our understanding of climate change and our collective efforts to combat it.
