Rishi Sunak Will Relocate To A Modest And Compact Downing Street Apartment
Rishi Sunak, the ultra-rich new prime minister of Britain, and his family intend to reside in the apartment above 10 Downing Street despite having a number of opulent homes, including one in London.
According to reports, Mr. Sunak has a penthouse in California, an apartment in London’s upscale Kensington neighborhood, and a mansion in the northern English county of Yorkshire.
However, the secretary to the prime minister has announced that he will be relocating to Downing Street.
Due to an extravagant renovation of his prime ministerial apartment, Boris Johnson found himself in hot water.
The former prime minister’s wife Carrie oversaw the opulent renovation of his apartment at No. 11 Downing Street, which is right across the hall. Johnson’s detractors had plenty of fodder to use thanks to the controversy surrounding how it was financed.
The specifics of pricey wallpaper rolls, incredibly trendy soft furnishings, and wealthy sponsors became the subject of countless newspaper stories that ultimately damaged his authority.
Despite being in a fantastic location, the No. 10 flat on Downing Street is very modestly sized.
With Rishi Sunak’s relocation, the British prime minister will once again call that apartment home in London.
Sunak’s Labrador also appears
British presidents have historically resided in the apartment above 10 Downing Street. The official residence and office of the nation’s prime ministers are located in the main structure it sits atop.
Most Chancellors resided in the larger apartment above No. 11.
To make room for Blair’s expanding family, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair switched apartments when Brown served as chancellor and prime minister, respectively.
In actuality, Mr. Sunak only recently left the No. 10 apartment because he had been residing there while serving as Johnson’s finance minister up until his resignation in July.
However, it is unlikely that the Sunaks, who have two daughters and a Labrador puppy, will need to rely on wealthy donors for any flat redecorations.
Sunak worked at Goldman Sachs and two hedge funds before tying the knot with the billionaire’s daughter of India in 2009. His wife Akshata Murty holds a sizeable stake in her father’s Infosys software company.
With a combined net worth of 730 million pounds, the pair is listed among the wealthy on The Sunday Times.
The Chequers estate is available for use by British prime ministers.
