Jonathan, The World’s Oldest Tortoise, Turns 190

The oldest known living land animal on the globe, he was born shortly after Napoleon’s demise.

On the island of St Helena in the far-off South Atlantic, where the defeated French emperor passed away in exile in 1821, Jonathan the Seychelles Giant Tortoise is roughly celebrating his 190th birthday.

Based on shell dimensions, it is estimated that Jonathan was born in or around 1832 and arrived in the UK’s overseas territory from Seychelles 50 years later.

He enjoys a comfortable retirement in Plantation House, the governor of St. Helena’s official residence, where his birthday is being celebrated all weekend long with festivities that include the release of a special stamp.

The culmination of the party will be a birthday cake composed of Jonathan’s favorite meals on December 4.

According to his handlers, AFP spoke in 2017, he prefers carrots, lettuce, cucumber, apples, and pears in particular.

He also has a soft spot for Emma, a female tortoise who is only in her mid-fifties despite his advanced age.

Jonathan received the Guinness World Records title for being the oldest living land animal at the beginning of this year. This month, he was also recognized as the oldest tortoise ever.

Authorities on St. Helena have already prepared for the elderly chelonian’s eventual demise, even though they hope for many more years. His shell will be preserved for future generations.
