On Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate searched a number of places in Kolkata in relation to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s financial irregularities. The father of former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, Satya Prakash Ghosh, was among the suburban addresses investigated by the federal agency.
Inquiring into financial irregularities, the Economic Intelligence Agency and the CBI questioned Akhter Ali, the hospital’s former non-medical deputy superintendent, on Wednesday.According to The Telegraph, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar who was detained in relation to allegations of corruption at the hospital, questioned Ali for the agency over claims of nepotism in vendor selection.
Ali claimed that Ghosh and other individuals were engaged in corrupt activities in a letter dated July 14, 2023, addressed to the State Vigilance Commission. The report cited sources when stating that Ali’s statements are essential to the inquiry.
Ali stated that the agency responsible for managing the hospital’s bio-medical waste had not been getting the proper quantity of waste for the past five to six months. He also noted in the letter that contracts worth millions of rupees were given to unqualified bidders. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) was investigating a minimum of seven properties belonging to Sandip Ghosh, the ex-principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with his wife, believed to have been bought with funds from illegal activities. During the previous week, ED discovered papers connected to these properties while conducting searches at various locations, including Kolkata, in the homes of Ghosh and some of his family members and colleagues.
The agency said that Sangeeta Ghosh bought two real estate properties without the state government’s permission while serving as an assistant professor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital under Sandip Ghosh’s principalship. The agency further stated that in 2021, she received post facto clearance. Sangeeta Ghosh insisted that her spouse had done nothing improper.
