Six yards and 365 days, a facebook campaign started by Sunita Buddhiraja had it’s 5th National meet at Lalit Great Eastern, kolkata. The city of joy welcomed members from across the country for the meet. About 80 ladies from different walks of life attended the meet whose main objective is to preserve and protect the handloom sarees from across the country.
Members drape exotic sarees and post their pictures in the group which not only increases the knowledge but also encourages others to buy. As the Founder late Sunita Buddhiraja had said when you buy a handloom saree you actually support 20 families. The admin Aditi Mukherjee carries on the legacy ably assisted by Swati Vashisth. The afternoon started with the lighting of the lamp by danseuse Tanushree Shankar. She was joined by Nandita Raja of Kanishka fame.
Both of them were joined on stage by group expert Indu Halder, a retired civil service officer. They impressed upon the need to lure more youngsters into the saree fold. After lunch it was a power packed session with padmashree Biren Basak and Padmashree Pritikona Goswami taking stage. It was heartening to listen to their journey of craftsmanship. Biren Basak displayed how a pure 500 count saree can pass through a finger ring and some outstanding woven crafts. There were some fun moments with rj Abhishek before the ladies took to the ramp who were judged by Jayati Mukherjee, associate professor, NIFT Kolkata.
