Shri Amit Saraogi, President, MCCI in his welcome address said that the jute industry is among the oldest and most promising industries in India. Often referred to as the ‘Golden Fibre’, jute is the second-most important natural fibre crop in India, after cotton. West Bengal having the highest number of mills is the largest producer of Jute in the country, contributing to nearly 75% of the country’s production. Jute, by virtue of being natural, renewable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly has immense opportunities due to rising global awareness for eco-friendly alternatives to plastics.

Janab Firhad Hakim in his address said that both tea and jute play an important role on the economy of West Bengal. The Ganga – Brahmaputra delta produces 90% of the country’s raw jute. Jute is a natural fabric which provides employment to a large number of farmers as well as workers in jute mills. The industry is diversifying its product range to include value-added products like jute-based composites, paper and textiles. For the modernization and development of the jute industry in India, GoI has implemented several schemes and initiatives. Jute enjoys bright prospects in both India and abroad as it is eco-friendly and bio-degradeable.

Janab Hakim appreciated the hard work done by Smt. Chaitali Das in producing such a well written book.

The Session ended with a hearty Vote of thanks proposed by Smt. Deepali Saraogi, Chairperson, MLF.
