The Emergency in India was a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had a state of emergency declared across the country. Officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352 of the Constitution because of the prevailing “internal disturbance”, the Emergency was in effect from 25 June 1975 until its withdrawal on 21 March 1977.
Indira Declared Emergency after Judges gave verdict against Indira Gandhi’s Lokshaba election From Rae Bareilly in case The State of Uttar Pradesh v. Raj Narain.
This invalidated Gandhi’s win and barred her from holding elected office for six years.Mrs Gandhi was represented by the noted lawyer Nani Palkhiwala and Raj Narayan by Shanti Bhushan.Raj Narayan became a giant killer and over night Super star of the Struggle against Emergency and State brutality .During 1977 election after Emergency was revoked Janta Party a coalition of various non-Congress parties Came into power with “thumping majority”.
During 1977 Raj Narayan was invited to speak on the Topic of “Removal Of Caste”.In his Speech he kept on using word “Harijan” as a term for dalit. Then a young Female in her 20s, a school teacher who is also preparing for IAS,was called to give a speech .She started by saying that Raj Narayan is actually insulting the dalit people by calling them “Harijan “ ,she said harijan have no constitutional value and she is a SC or a dalit but she is not an Harijan .
She went on to ask if harijan means people of God and who Raj Narayan is ?
IS he follower of devil .Her Flaring Speech made Giant killer Speechless .The crowd went crazy ,everybody was cheering and clapping ,a 15 minute speech made Giant Killer a “Bhigi Billi”. People started “Raj Narayan Murdabad” The man who slayed Indira Gandhi had now been slayed by a No-body .This young Female was none Other than Behen Kumari Mayawati.
