Viruses Hit Kolkata, With Symptoms That Are Similar To Dengue And Malaria
In Kolkata, a number of viruses that share symptoms with dengue are active, prompting many people to get tested for both diseases. While many of these patients exhibit the typical dengue symptoms of a high fever, body aches, and nausea, the majority of them test negative for vector-borne viruses.
Doctors noted that it is challenging to detect a virus without performing a test and that seasonal viruses such as the rhinovirus, human meta-pneumo virus, and influenza viruses, which often see a surge at this time of the year, are likely to be the cause of the symptoms.
Some of them have been causing severe rashes, diarrhea, and high fever, sending victims running to hospitals. There are now 50 viral infection patients being treated at six private hospitals in Kolkata.
A variety of viruses, mostly respiratory and gastrointestinal in nature, have reportedly been activated by the temperature drop. The latter have been causing fever, nausea, and loose stools in addition to the former’s cough and, in some cases, a respiratory disease. Although the majority of tests now come back negative, doctors are still recommending patients get tested because dengue cases are still occurring. It is advised that those who have a respiratory illness get a Covid test.
Unless the infection becomes very serious, tests to identify viruses are rarely suggested. This season’s influenza viruses appear to be particularly active thus far. However, occurrences have been mild to moderate, and signs and symptoms, such as fever, are subsiding in three to five days. Without the dengue outbreak, panic would not have occurred.
According to Joydeep Ghosh, an internal medicine consultant at AMRI Hospital Mukundapur, common viruses causes identical symptoms that go away in three to five days.
He continued by saying that people under the age of 12 and those over 65 were vulnerable to bacterial illnesses when they had a viral fever.
Doctors have been concerned since several children have been experiencing fever and rashes on their bodies. Children are getting hit by it more regularly.
