The Kolkata Metro Railway announced the commencement of construction for the underground Mominpur-Esplanade stretch of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor (Purple Line), as conveyed in a statement released on Saturday.
The Joka-Esplanade corridor, spanning 15.08 kilometers in south Kolkata, witnessed the inauguration of its initial 6.5-kilometer segment from Joka to Taratala on December 30, 2022, subsequently extended to Majerhat on March 6, 2024. The upcoming phase of construction will entail tunnelling operations starting from Khidderpore and extending up to Victoria (Memorial) station. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations will commence from the grounds of St. Thomas School.
Furthermore, to facilitate the construction of the Park Street station, temporary relocation of three club tents in the Maidan area – namely, the Calcutta Police Club, Calcutta Kennel Club, and Rajasthan Club – is necessitated, according to an official statement. Additionally, for the construction of the Esplanade Metro station, the Kolkata Mounted Police paddock will undergo temporary relocation to SaheedMinarMaidan, while the dewatering of the ManohardasTarag waterbody will be undertaken to facilitate the construction of tunnels beneath it.
