Shelley Duvall, Star of “The Shining” and “Annie Hall”, Passes Away at 75

Shelley Duvall, renowned for her roles in classic films like “The Shining” and “Annie Hall”, has died at the age of 75, confirmed by her partner Dan Gilroy to The Hollywood Reporter. Gilroy expressed grief over her passing, stating, “My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.”

Duvall passed away peacefully in her sleep at her Texas home due to complications from diabetes. Her career spanned decades, with notable performances in films such as Robert Altman’s “3 Women”, where she won the Best Actress award at Cannes and received a BAFTA nomination. She also starred alongside Robin Williams in Altman’s musical adaptation of “Popeye”.

Known for her distinctive brown eyes and unique charisma, Duvall began her career with Altman in the 1970 dark comedy “Brewster McCloud”. Their collaboration continued with critically acclaimed films like “McCabe and Mrs Miller” and “Nashville”. Altman praised her versatility, remarking that she could portray a wide range of characters from charming to pathetic with equal finesse.

Her most iconic role came in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” (1980) as Wendy, the wife of Jack Nicholson’s character. The intense filming process took a toll on Duvall, who recalled having to cry for extensive periods daily throughout production.

Despite her prominent early career, Duvall faced challenges in Hollywood later on, leading to a hiatus that lasted two decades. She returned to the screen in 2023 with “The Forest Hills”, marking a comeback celebrated for reaffirming her enduring talent.

Throughout her life, Duvall’s journey was marked by both acclaim and adversity. In a 2016 appearance on Dr. Phil, concerns about her health and well-being were raised, with Duvall expressing distress and discussing troubling experiences she believed she was facing.
