Over the weekend, Mumbai witnessed a spectacular event as Anant Ambani, son of India’s wealthiest man Mukesh Ambani, tied the knot with Radhika Merchant, heiress to a pharmaceutical fortune. The extravagant affair, attended by approximately 5,000 of the world’s elite, took place at the opulent Jio World Convention Centre.
Guests included international celebrities like Kim and Khloe Kardashian, former UK Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Tony Blair, and Bollywood stars Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. The celebrations spanned several days and were held at what is deemed the most expensive venue globally, with every five-star hotel in Mumbai booked exclusively for the occasion.
Reports indicate that the Ambani family spared no expense, booking 100 private jets to transport guests from around the world. Festivities commenced months earlier with a pre-wedding bash featuring performances by Rihanna and Akon, followed by a lavish Mediterranean cruise costing £94.5 million, where Katy Perry, Backstreet Boys, and Pitbull entertained guests over four days.
For the main event, Anant arrived on a white horse, while Radhika made a grand entrance on a wooden boat, symbolizing tradition amidst luxury. The ceremony, held under an elaborate altar adorned with a white dome, included cultural rituals and a touching poem recited by Anant’s mother, Nita Ambani.
Radhika stunned in a gold lehenga designed by Manish Malhotra, complemented by intricate jewellery and accessories. The venue itself was a spectacle, adorned with 1,000 crystal chandeliers and 20 million flowers, meticulously arranged by a team of 500 florists.
Food and drinks were equally extravagant, with over 37,500 menu options prepared by a brigade of 500 chefs, accompanied by vintage champagne served to guests throughout the celebrations. The sheer scale of luxury and opulence at the event drew both awe and criticism in a country where stark wealth disparities persist.
Despite the grandeur, the Ambani family’s wedding also reflected a commitment to philanthropy, hosting a mass wedding for over 50 underprivileged couples prior to the main event, in line with legislation aimed at curbing extravagant wedding expenditures.
The Ambani wedding underscores a broader trend of escalating expenditures in Indian weddings, symbolizing not just personal wealth but also the changing norms around ostentatious displays of affluence.
