Independence Day 2024: Telangana Constable Among 1,037 Honored with Police Gallantry Medals

As India commemorates its 78th Independence Day, the Union Home Ministry has recognized the bravery and service of 1,037 police personnel, fire service members, home guards, civil defense staff, and correctional services personnel by awarding them gallantry and service medals. This year’s honors, approved by President Droupadi Murmu, highlight the courageous efforts and dedication of those who serve to protect the nation.
One of the standout recipients is Telangana Police Head Constable Chaduvu Yadaiah, who has been awarded the prestigious President’s Medal for Gallantry. His heroism dates back to July 2022 when he played a pivotal role in apprehending two notorious criminals, Ishan Niranjan Neelamnalli and Rahul, who were involved in chain snatching and arms dealing in the Cyberabad region.
The apprehension of these criminals was no easy task. As Head Constable Yadaiah moved to arrest them, the criminals resorted to violence, attacking him with a knife. Despite being stabbed multiple times in the chest, back, and abdomen, Yadaiah displayed extraordinary bravery by not only resisting the attack but also ensuring that both criminals were subdued and held until backup arrived. His actions, while resulting in severe injuries that required 17 days of hospitalization, saved lives and prevented further crimes. This act of courage has rightfully earned him one of the nation’s highest honors for gallantry.
In addition to Head Constable Yadaiah, 213 other personnel will also be awarded the Gallantry Medal (GM) this Independence Day. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) leads the list with 52 medals, reflecting the force’s critical role in maintaining internal security across various regions of the country. The Jammu and Kashmir Police, often on the frontlines in one of India’s most volatile regions, have been awarded 31 gallantry medals. Other states recognized for their police personnel’s bravery include Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, each with 17 awards, followed by Chhattisgarh with 15 and Madhya Pradesh with 12.
The Gallantry Medals, including the President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and the Medal for Gallantry (GM), are awarded to individuals who have performed rare and conspicuous acts of bravery. These acts often involve life-threatening situations where the individuals have either saved lives, protected property, or successfully apprehended dangerous criminals, all while incurring significant personal risk. The recognition of such acts serves not only to honor the individual but also to inspire others within the force to perform their duties with similar courage and dedication.
Beyond the gallantry awards, the government has also announced the conferment of 94 President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 729 Medals for Meritorious Service. The President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service is a recognition of a long-standing and exemplary record in police service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service is awarded for notable service marked by resourcefulness and dedication to duty. These medals are awarded twice a year, on Independence Day and Republic Day, ensuring that the extraordinary efforts of the country’s police and security personnel are regularly acknowledged.
