Ravichandran Ashwin opens up about his retirement plans

India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently opened up about his retirement plans and said that he will leave the sport the day he feels he cannot improve any further.

While speaking on Vimal Kumar’s official YouTube channel, the 37-year-old spoke about his retirement plans. He said, “There is nothing like that in my mind. I am only thinking about one day at a time because when you get older, you have to put in extra effort every single day. It’s not the same. I have put in a lot of effort in the last 3-4 years.”

“I haven’t decided (retirement), but the day I feel that today I don’t want to improve, I will leave. That’s all.”

The Tamil Nadu cricketer made his Indian test debut back in November 2011 against West Indies. Over the span of 13 years, he has played 100 tests and bagged 516 wickets in 189 innings with an economy of 2.81. Despite being a bowling all-rounder, the soon-to-be 38-year-old player has scored 3309 in 141 innings with an average of 26.26.

Ashwin has been selected for the Indian test squad which will be playing two tests against Bangladesh. The first match will be held at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium from September 19.

The second match against the Bangladeshis is set to be played at Kanpur from September 27. Team India are currently first in the standings of WTC with a point percentage of 68.52. The Bangladesh series is the first of the sequence of series Men in Blue will be playing with New Zealand (three tests, home) and Australia (five tests, away) standing next in line.
