Vinesh Phogat wins in Julana

News Mania / Piyal Chatterjee / 9th October 2024

Haryana’s Julana assembly seat has been won by Vinesh Phogat, a former wrestler and Congress contender. After winning the vote, Ms. Phogat declared in her initial response that “truth has won.”
Her victory coincides with the fact that, according to the most recent trends on the Election Commission website, the Congress was ahead on 35 seats and the ruling BJP had crossed the majority threshold in the Haryana assembly with 50 seats. The exit poll results that projected a Congress return in the state have been refuted by the BJP’s outstanding performance in Haryana, where the party is poised to win a third term in office.

Undeterred by the trends, the 30-year-old remained hopeful and said, “Let’s wait for sometime. When the certificates will come, the Congress will form the government.”

On Tuesday at 8 a.m., the ballots cast in the elections held on October 5 in Haryana were counted. The Olympian defeated BJP’s Captain Yogesh Bairagi, a former Army officer, and former professional wrestler Kavita Dalal from the Aam Aadmi Party – a member of the opposition alliance INDIA at the centre – with a margin of more than 6,000 seats. On September 6, Ms. Phogat, who experienced tremendous Olympic heartbreak this year following her shocking disqualification, became a member of the Congress. Only a few hours later, she was on the party’s candidate list.

She thanked the Congress after her political entry and said, “It is only when times are bad that one finds out who is standing with them. When we were dragged on the roads, every party other than the BJP stood with us and understood our pain and our tears”.

“I am starting a new innings. I want sportspersons don’t have to face what we had to go through,” she said.

The outcomes of the elections in Haryana are anticipated to be utilized by the victor to create a narrative in their favor in other states where votes are scheduled over the coming months. This is the first significant direct confrontation between the BJP and the Congress since the Lok Sabha polls.
