Bengaluru collapse: 6 dead, some still trapped, building owner arrested

An under-construction building collapsed in northern Bengaluru on Tuesday evening, resulting in 13 rescues and six fatalities. Authorities were concerned that some people might still be buried beneath the debris. Muniraju Reddy, the building’s owner, has been taken into custody by the police and accused of negligence. Rescue efforts are still in progress.

The tragedy happened in the Babusapalya neighborhood of the city’s Hennur section during a period of intense rains. However, some said that poor construction and inferior materials, rather than the rain, were to blame for the collapse.The moment the seven-story building collapsed was filmed on CCTV. According to sources, there were construction issues and the structure was only permitted for four levels.

Sources claim that the building’s pillar rods should have been 28–30 mm thick, however they were only 18–20 mm thick. It was possible that the rods utilized were only 8–10 mm thick in other areas, such the molding, where 14–16 mm thick rods should have been used.

According to them, there was also a chance that more sand and less cement than was necessary were employed in the building process. Five of the injured were transferred to the city’s Hosmat hospital, while four were brought to Bengaluru North hospital, officials said. For the rescue efforts, the emergency and fire departments sent out two rescue vans. According to a senior police officer, “the rescue operation is being carried out in a coordinated effort with help from other agencies,”

Twenty laborers, including plumbers, concrete workers, and tile workers, were inside the building when it fell, according to Ahmed, one of the first persons to be rescued. According to reports, Ahmed was hired to tile the building. He said that the collapse might have been caused in part by the basement’s weakness. In response to the tragedy, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated that 21 workers were inside the building when it happened.

“I was informed that there were twenty-one laborers present. The body of Arman, age 26, was found. He was cited as adding, “26 people work here in a day.” Additionally, he informed the news agency that the site was the scene of unlawful activity and that he would take strong measures against the owner and other participants. Rain has been falling continuously in Bengaluru, causing traffic, potholes, and waterlogging in several areas of the city, particularly in north Bengaluru. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike reports that in just six hours, from midnight to six in the morning on Tuesday, Yelahanka received 157 mm (six inches) of rain.
