On his first official visit to Delhi since taking office, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday and presented him with a resolution calling for the union territory’s statehood to be restored as soon as possible, according to officials. Over the course of the more than 30-minute meeting, Abdullah covered a range of topics pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir, such as the current state of security and ongoing development projects.

Following the meeting, images of the chief minister were posted by the prime minister’s office. According to the sources, Abdullah also presented the resolution that his Cabinet had enacted last week, which called on the federal government to reinstate Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood “in its original form”.

After Abdullah’s National Conference recorded an astounding victory in the union territory’s inaugural assembly elections, capturing 42 of the 90 members, the resolution was approved by the new administration during its first cabinet meeting last week. According to the government, this restoration is a critical first step in restoring constitutional rights, starting a healing process, and preserving the distinctive identity of the local population.

The cabinet has given the chief minister permission to speak with the prime minister and the federal administration in order to promote the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s status as a state. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir also accepted this decision.

The resolution was adopted by the new government at its first cabinet meeting last week, following the remarkable success of Abdullah’s National Conference, which won 42 of the 90 seats in the union territory’s first assembly elections. The administration claims that this restoration is an essential first step toward regaining constitutional rights, igniting a healing process, and protecting the local population’s unique identity. To encourage the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir as a state, the cabinet has authorized the chief minister to communicate with the prime minister and the federal government. This decision was also approved by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

Four days after terrorists from the outlawed Lashkar-e-Taiba killed seven people, including a local doctor, in Gagangir, Ganderbal district, on Sunday, Abdullah met with Modi. In order to finish the development work, Abdullah met with Rajnath Singh, the minister of defense, and asked for collaboration in improving the security situation on union territory.

After meeting the chief minister, the defence minister tweeted, “Met with the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Shri @OmarAbdullah in New Delhi. The NDA Govt under PM Shri @narendramodi is looking forward to working with him for J&K’s progress.” Abdullah also met Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar and discussed the power situation in the union territory. The minister later put out a tweet along with Abdullah terming it as a courtesy call.
