The city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh celebrated Diwali in a historic way this year, hosting its first Deepostav after Ram Lalla was installed in the recently built Ram Mandir. In addition to being a landmark occasion for the city, this first event garnered media attention by breaking two Guinness World Records.

With more than 2.5 million clay lights (diyas) lit along the banks of the Saryu River, the Deepostav was a magnificent display of devotion. 55 ghats, including the well-known Ram ki Paidi, participated in the magnificent show. An environment of reverence and devotion was created as 1,121 “vedacharyas,” or professors of holy literature, performed “aarti” simultaneously as a sign of oneness. Drones were used to carefully count the diyas, guaranteeing accuracy in this momentous accomplishment.

On the social media site X (previously Twitter), Guinness World Records posted an overhead video of the occasion along with the caption, “New record: Largest display of oil lamps 2,512,585 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India #happydiwali.” A new record was also set for the most persons doing diya rotations at the same time, they noted in a later post.

Surprisingly, Ayodhya has already set the record for the greatest oil lamp display seven times; the first record was set in November 2021. More than 30,000 volunteers, mostly college students, helped make this year’s event a huge success by arranging the diyas in eye-catching rows that produced a mesmerizing aerial image.1,211 people participated in the attempt to set the second record, which was about “most people performing diya rotations simultaneously.” On the night of the event, QR codes were utilized to get access, and all participants had practiced beforehand. To help participants stay in time with the main act, stewards were on hand to provide guidance.

The spectacle, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was “amazing, incomparable, and unimaginable.” “This Jyotiparva at the holy birthplace of Ram Lalla, illuminated by millions of diyas, is going to be emotional,” he said, congratulating the people of Ayodhya on their great Deepotsav. He added that families all around the nation would be given fresh life by the light coming from Ayodhya.

The Deepotsav celebrated Ayodhya’s rich cultural legacy in addition to highlighting its spiritual significance. In addition to a Ram Leela performance from Uttarakhand, performances by artists from Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Indonesia added to the event’s grandeur and highlighted the rich tapestry of customs that characterize this sacred city.
