On Tuesday morning, former Union Home Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram called for the dismissal of Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh “immediately.” In light of the continuing tensions in Manipur following the deaths of six innocent people, including women and children, he criticized the government for the deployment of an additional 5,000 central armed police officers.
Chidambaram demanded that Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh be replaced “immediately” and stated that he must be acknowledged as the source of this issue. He went on to say that regional autonomy is necessary for the Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and Naga to coexist in a single state. In addition, the former Union Minister made fun of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by claiming that it would be statesmanship for him to go to Manipur and solve their issues.
“Rushing 5,000 more central armed police jawans is not the answer to the Manipur crisis. It is more wisdom: acknowledging that Mr Biren Singh, the chief minister, is the cause of the crisis and removing him immediately. It is more understanding: that the Meitei, the Kuki-Zo and the Naga can live together in one State only if they have genuine regional autonomy. It is more statesmanship: for the Hon’ble PM to give up his obstinacy, visit Manipur, and speak to the people of Manipur with humility and learn first-hand their grievances and aspirations,” P Chidambaram said.
On Monday, a number of Manipur MLAs issued a resolution outlining their demands, one of which was for the federal government to examine the state’s implementation of the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA). A mass operation against the Kuki militants, who are accused of killing six people in Jiribam, including women and children, must be launched within seven days, according to the decision. Additionally, it called for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over three significant cases including the murder of a woman farmer, the burning death of another lady, and the murder of six innocent bystanders.
In their decision, the MLAs agreed to designate Kuki militants as a “unlawful organization” within seven days of the killings of six innocent persons, including women and children.
“If the above resolutions taken are not implemented within the specified period, all the NDA Legislators will decide the future course of action in consultation with the people of the State,” the resolution released by the Chief Minister’s Secretariat read while ensuring that central and state government would take steps to ensure normalcy in Manipur.
