As officials restored a temple in Sambhal that had been sealed since 1978 due to communal violence, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated on Sunday that the temple did not arise overnight and represented “our enduring heritage and the truth of our history”. Speaking at a private Kumbh event, the chief minister recalled the horrific happenings that occurred 46 years ago in Sambhal, when innocent people were killed by “barbaric violence,” and asked, “Why have the perpetrators of the massacre not been brought to justice even after decades?” He criticized people who strive to “suppress the truth and tarnish cultural events” such as the Kumbh, claiming that voices of truth are frequently threatened and silenced.
According to an official release, the chief minister discussed the temple in Sambhal, which was recently opened after decades of anti-encroachment efforts by the local authorities. He underlined the temple’s historical value, which contained an antique idol of Bajrang Bali and a Jyotirlinga. “The temple did not emerge overnight. It signifies our enduring legacy and the truth about our past,” he stated. The CM declared that, while 40 crore devotees are anticipated to attend the 45-day Prayagraj Mahakumbh (January 13–February 26), plans are being prepared to accommodate 100 crore people. On January 29, during the major Muhurta of Mauni Amavasya, an estimated six crore devotees would take a holy bath, but preparations are being made to accommodate to 10 crore devotees.
The CM highlighted the transformation of the 2019 Prayagraj Kumbh, stating that it redefined expectations. “Anyone who witnessed the Kumbh of 2019 would have seen the out-of-the-box efforts that made it clean, safe, and well-organized. What was once associated with dirt, chaos, stampedes, and insecurity became a divine and grand event,” he said.
Adityanath also took a swipe at the Congress and opposition parties for claiming “exclusive ownership” of India’s legacy. “Some people wander around with a self-proclaimed contract of representing India and treat Discovery of India as if it were the oldest book of this country,” he remarked, without naming any party.
He stated that the historic Supreme Court ruling on Shri Ram Janmabhoomi, issued on November 9, 2019, ended a decades-long conflict. However, he pointed out that some people continue to threaten the judges who made the verdict. The chief minister accused opposition politicians of hypocrisy in the name of the Constitution, referring to their intended no-confidence move against the Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman. “The Chairman stressed his responsibility to ensure that the House functions and public problems are addressed. Nonetheless, these people accused him of prejudice and filed a no-confidence motion to silence him,” he stated. He also criticized attempts to challenge institutions such as the Election Commission.
Chief Minister Adityanath emphasized that the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has been critical in encouraging prosperity in the region. He said that those who controlled for decades without making any advances are now criticizing the current government. “They are concerned about Kashi and Ayodhya’s spiritual growth. Their frustration originates from their failure and our triumph. “We must understand their mindset,” he stated.
