Mumbai Hostage Crisis: 17 Children Rescued, Captor Killed After Four-Hour Standoff in Powai Studio

Mumbai witnessed a tense and shocking hostage situation on Thursday afternoon when a man, identified as Rohit Arya, held 17 children and two adults captive inside a recording studio in the city’s Powai area. The children, aged between 10 and 15, had reportedly arrived at RA Studio in Mahavir Classik building for what they believed was an audition for a web series. Once inside, Arya locked the doors and refused to let anyone leave.

According to police, the crisis began around 1:45 pm when Arya, claiming to be a filmmaker, threatened to set the premises ablaze unless his “demands for justice” were met. In a chilling video uploaded before the standoff, Arya said, “Instead of suicide, I planned to take a few children hostage. I am not a terrorist, nor do I want money. I just want moral and ethical conversations.” He warned that any “wrong move” by authorities would compel him to burn down the place.

Mumbai Police quickly cordoned off the area and began negotiations, deploying senior officers, psychologists, and members of the Quick Response Team (QRT). For nearly four hours, negotiators attempted to calm Arya, who was reportedly armed with an air gun and cans of inflammable liquid. As talks failed, Arya allegedly fired at the police through a window, prompting the commandos to storm the studio from the rear.

By around 5 pm, all hostages were rescued unharmed in a swift tactical operation. Arya, who was injured in the ensuing exchange, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. Officials later confirmed that no child or officer sustained serious injuries.

Police sources said Arya had a history of erratic behaviour and financial disputes. He had reportedly claimed that the government owed him money for past creative projects. His social media posts also hinted at growing frustration with the system. Investigators are now examining his background, motives, and whether he acted alone.

The incident has sparked widespread concern over the safety of children participating in film and media auditions. Authorities are reviewing security protocols at studios and production sites across Mumbai.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised the police for their “bravery and precision,” while parents of the rescued children expressed relief and gratitude. The dramatic rescue ended what could have been a major tragedy, exposing both the fragility of public safety and the depths of individual despair behind one of Mumbai’s most unnerving recent crises.
