Neha Bhasin reveals suicide attempt at 20 after being fat-shamed during Viva days: ‘I was 50 kg at the time’

Singer Neha Bhasin, recognized for her popular tracks such as Kuch Khaas Hai, Dunki, and Jag Ghoomeya, among others, recently disclosed a surprising detail in an interview. The singer disclosed that she tried to take her own life at 20 following body-shaming experiences. At that moment, she was a member of the girl pop ensemble Viva, alongside Seema Ramchandani, Pratichee Mohapatra, Mahua Kamat, and Anushka Manchanda.

During a podcast featuring Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa, Neha reminisced about being prescribed fat burners in 2003, only a year after starting her career. She mentioned that she did not know about their impacts because of her youth. The singer also described a troubling event related to the television channel Viva they were contracted with.

In the midst of a confrontation, she mentioned that a man from the channel degraded her by displaying a video in a conference room, highlighting her stomach on the screen and stating, “See, you are so fat. Because of this, we can’t release the video. I was 50 kg at that time. I remember going home and, in anger, consuming more than half a bottle of fat burners. That was my way of trying to commit suicide. For two days, I was throwing up. The band didn’t know what had happened,” Neha said.

In recent years, Neha has become vocal about her health struggles. In 2024, she took to social media to share her long battle with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition she has been dealing with since her teenage years. She also revealed that in 2022, she was diagnosed with low progesterone, which has made it difficult for her to function for nearly half of each month.

Neha is a talented Indian playback singer and performer recognized for her strong voice. She initially rose to fame in 2002 as a part of India’s first all-female pop group Viva, created via the reality program Coke [V] Popstars. Following the group’s breakup, Neha established a thriving solo career in Bollywood, Tollywood, and the independent music industry.

She has provided her voice for various popular songs, such as Kuch Khaas (Fashion), Jag Ghoomeya (Sultan), Dhunki (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan), and Asalaam-e-Ishqum (Gunday), receiving critical praise and accolades. Recognized for her vibrant character and unique fashion, Neha has additionally launched multiple independent tracks and folk-fusion songs. She has performed in various languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Punjabi. In 2021, Neha took part in Bigg Boss OTT and Bigg Boss 15.
