A second-year student from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Kolkata was detained on Saturday for reportedly drugging and sexually assaulting a woman within the Joka campus, according to police. The student in question, Mahaveer Toppannawar, has been placed in police custody until July 19, according to a police officer familiar with the situation.
“A woman lodged a complaint at the Haridevpur police station on Friday late evening that she was raped by a student inside IIMC campus. Investigation started after the complaint was received and an accused has been arrested,” the officer said.
Preliminary investigations suggest that she had come from outside and had not registered her name in the visitor’s book, either at the main gate or at the boys’ hostel, the officer said. “She claimed that she had pizza and water after which she became drowsy. Police is investigating,” the officer added.
The centre has asked for a report from the IIM Kolkata director. “The incident took place inside the hostel. I have sought a report from the IIM director. Law and order is a state subject. Police are investigating. They will take action as per law,” union minister of state for education Sukanta Majumdar said.
This occurs days after a 24-year-old student was assaulted by a gang within a law college in southern Kolkata. Four individuals were apprehended, and they are currently in detention.
IIM Calcutta stated on Saturday that the institution has a zero tolerance policy for such occurrences and is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful campus atmosphere. The institute stated that the issue is being handled with the highest level of seriousness, and the authorities are completely cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
The father of the complainant refuted the claim that his daughter was raped, stating that she had fallen from an autorickshaw. The woman’s father informed the media that he got a call at 9:34 PM on Friday notifying him that his daughter had fallen from an auto and “lost her senses.” According to an NDTV report, he learned that she had been admitted to the SSKM hospital’s neurology department after being rescued by the police.
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal asserted that the IIM-C rape case must not be ‘politicised’ and that the police should be permitted to carry out their investigative responsibilities.
Union minister and BJP leader in West Bengal, Sukanta Majumdar, urged for an impartial investigation into the purported incident. He stated that he would address the issue with the IIM-C director.
