PM Modi Wishes Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar ‘Good Health’ After Resignation Citing Health Reasons

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday, citing the need to prioritise his health, marking a sudden end to his tenure just under three years after assuming office. The resignation came as the Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced, and was accepted immediately by President Droupadi Murmu.
Following the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to extend his best wishes to the outgoing Vice President. In a brief but respectful message, he stated, “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health.”
Dhankhar submitted his resignation under Article 67(a) of the Constitution, which allows the Vice President to vacate office by submitting a letter to the President. While his letter did not specify the medical issues involved, it emphasised that health had become a priority. He also expressed his appreciation to colleagues and constitutional authorities. “It has been a privilege to serve as the Vice President during a transformative period in India’s growth journey. My interactions with members across the political spectrum have been enriching, and I carry with me invaluable experiences and insights,” he wrote.
Dhankhar, 74, was elected as India’s 14th Vice President in August 2022. A seasoned politician and former Governor of West Bengal, his tenure as Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman was marked by assertive interventions and vocal support for judicial reforms. However, his health has drawn concern in recent months—he was hospitalised at AIIMS in March 2025 after experiencing cardiac discomfort, and again made headlines in June after collapsing at an event in Uttarakhand.
While the resignation was formally attributed to health concerns, it has triggered political ripples. Opposition parties, especially the Congress, questioned the timing and motive. Some leaders alleged that there may be “far deeper” reasons behind his resignation and urged Prime Minister Modi to disclose the complete facts. However, BJP leaders dismissed such claims, asserting that Dhankhar’s decision was purely guided by medical advice.
President Murmu has formally accepted the resignation, and the Vice President’s seat now lies vacant. As per parliamentary procedure, the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha will preside over proceedings until a new Vice President is elected.
The government has not yet announced a timeline for the election of Dhankhar’s successor, though political circles are abuzz with speculation over possible nominees for the high constitutional office.
