Who Was Neem Karoli Baba, the Spiritual Guru Who Inspired Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Julia Roberts?

Neem Karoli Baba, popularly known as Maharaj-ji, was a revered Indian spiritual teacher and devoted follower of Lord Hanuman whose influence extended far beyond India. His teachings centred on love, compassion, devotion and selfless service, attracting followers from different parts of the world. His life and spiritual journey have now gained renewed attention through the film Hanuman Ansh.

Born as Lakshman Narayan Sharma, Neem Karoli Baba became widely known for his simple approach to spirituality. Rather than emphasising material success, he encouraged his followers to focus on serving others, expressing love and maintaining devotion. His spiritual legacy continues through the ashrams associated with him, particularly Kainchi Dham in Uttarakhand.

His teachings became known internationally largely through his American disciple Richard Alpert, who later became known as Ram Dass. After meeting Neem Karoli Baba in India, Ram Dass underwent a major spiritual transformation and later documented his experiences and teachings in his influential book Be Here Now. The publication helped introduce the guru’s philosophy to a much wider Western audience.

Neem Karoli Baba’s influence also reached prominent figures in technology and entertainment. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs visited India in search of spiritual guidance and had planned to meet the guru, although Baba had died before Jobs reached Kainchi. Jobs’ experience in India nevertheless became an important part of his spiritual journey.

Years later, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg visited Kainchi Dham during a difficult period for the company. According to accounts cited in the report, Jobs had advised Zuckerberg to visit the ashram and reconnect with his sense of purpose.

Hollywood actor Julia Roberts has also spoken about Neem Karoli Baba’s influence on her spiritual journey. His teachings and image reportedly had a profound impact on her, contributing to her interest in Hinduism. Neem Karoli Baba died in 1973, but his philosophy continues to attract devotees and visitors. Kainchi Dham has become an important spiritual destination, drawing people seeking peace, reflection and a deeper connection with his teachings.
