A day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal suffered a major setback in the Bihar Assembly elections, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya triggered a political stir by announcing that she is stepping away from politics and severing ties with her family. Her sudden declaration on social media has drawn sharp reactions across the political spectrum.
In her post, Rohini expressed deep disappointment and cited personal reasons for her decision, naming two individuals whom she said influenced her move. The announcement immediately sparked commentary from rival parties, especially the Janata Dal (United). JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar called the development “painful,” remarking that the same daughter who once saved Lalu Prasad Yadav’s life by donating a kidney is now publicly withdrawing from both politics and her family. He raised questions about internal discord within the Yadav household, suggesting that the situation reflects serious strains behind the scenes.
While JD(U) leaders capitalised on the moment to criticise the RJD’s leadership, others chose restraint. BJP’s Ram Kripal Yadav said the matter should be viewed as a private family issue and not politicised. Within the RJD, members refrained from giving official reactions, though party insiders acknowledged that the announcement has added to existing tensions following the election defeat.
Rohini Acharya has been a prominent and outspoken supporter of the RJD, often defending her father and siblings during political controversies. Her decision to step back is seen as a significant personal and political blow to the party, which is already grappling with leadership challenges and internal criticism.
With the Bihar election results reshaping political equations, Rohini’s exit adds a new dimension to the turbulence within the RJD and raises questions about the family’s future role in state politics.
