Anthropic Plans Public Benefit Fund With 5% Stake to Address AI Risks and Job Losses

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 19th October 2026

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude chatbot, has announced plans to establish a public benefit fund that will hold 5% of the company’s shares. The initiative aims to support projects that benefit society and help address the potential economic and social consequences of increasingly powerful AI systems.

The proposed Anthropic Public Benefit Fund will receive an initial allocation of company shares. Under the plan, it could receive an additional 2% stake for every 50% increase in Anthropic’s valuation, subject to the company’s discretion and applicable approval requirements. The arrangement is intended to expand the resources available for public-benefit initiatives as the company grows.

One of the fund’s key priorities will be addressing the disruption that artificial intelligence could cause to employment and labour markets. As businesses increasingly adopt AI tools to automate tasks, concerns have mounted over the possibility of job losses and the need to help workers adapt to changing economic conditions.

Anthropic has already committed $200 million towards research and initiatives examining the effects of AI on employment. The new fund could build on these efforts by supporting research, assisting affected workers and financing programmes designed to respond to wider social challenges associated with the technology.

The fund may also provide grants to non-profit organisations and offer direct financial assistance to selected groups. Anthropic has stated that the shares allocated to the fund will not be used to finance political donations or lobbying activities.

The announcement comes as the company considers a potential initial public offering (IPO), amid growing scrutiny of the economic implications and safety risks associated with advanced AI systems. The proposed structure would allow Anthropic to dedicate a portion of its corporate value to public-interest objectives. Including the new fund and existing commitments made by the company’s founders and employees, around 20% of Anthropic’s shares would be dedicated to public-benefit purposes, excluding future additions.
