Pope Leo XIV welcomed a gathering of major Hollywood actors and filmmakers at the Vatican, voicing concern over a troubling decline in cinema attendance. The special audience, held at the Apostolic Palace, brought together figures such as Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Monica Bellucci, and director Spike Lee.

The Pope described cinema as a vital “workshop of hope” in an age dominated by fast digital consumption and algorithm-driven content. He lamented that many theaters are shutting down, warning that the cultural and communal value of shared movie experiences is under threat.

He urged artists to resist the pull of algorithms that prioritize predictability over creativity. Instead, he called for a return to “slowness, silence, and difference,” encouraging filmmakers to address profound social themes such as war, poverty, loneliness, and human suffering—not by exploiting pain, but by exploring it honestly.

Pope Leo also emphasised the collective nature of filmmaking, praising not only famous actors and directors but also the countless behind-the-scenes professionals whose craft brings stories to life. He said good cinema expands our empathy and connects communities through shared emotion.

In a personal touch, the Pope shared his four favourite films: It’s a Wonderful Life, The Sound of Music, Ordinary People, and Life Is Beautiful. These, he said, reflect his hope in the power of simple stories to convey deep truths.

The Vatican organised the event as part of its Holy Year celebrations, marking a clear effort by the Church to strengthen ties with the world of culture and the arts. Observers say the meeting underscores Leo’s commitment to engaging with contemporary creative voices in a rapidly changing world.
