Seat-Sharing Talks Intensify Within DMK-Led Alliance Ahead of Tamil Nadu 2026 Polls

News Mania Desk /Piyal Chatterjee/6th January 2026

With the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, negotiations within the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance have gathered momentum, as the Congress pushes for a larger political role both during the campaign and in governance. The discussions have brought seat-sharing and power-sharing issues to the forefront, highlighting emerging strains within the alliance despite its recent electoral successes.

According to political sources, the Congress has conveyed its expectation of contesting around 40 Assembly seats in the upcoming elections. However, the DMK is reportedly willing to offer only 32 seats, leading to a noticeable gap between the two allies’ positions. While talks are still at an informal stage, the difference has triggered internal deliberations within the Congress, with leaders weighing how firmly to press their demand without destabilising the alliance.

Congress leaders in Tamil Nadu argue that the party’s role should reflect its long-standing presence in the state and its contribution to the alliance’s victories in recent Lok Sabha elections. Some leaders have suggested that the party may be flexible and settle for slightly fewer seats than initially demanded, but insist that a mere increase in numbers is not enough. They are also seeking a clearer understanding of their role in government if the DMK-led front returns to power, signalling that the issue extends beyond electoral arithmetic.

The developments have also led to speculation about the Congress exploring alternative political equations to strengthen its bargaining position. In this context, informal outreach to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has drawn attention. While no formal talks have been confirmed, such interactions have added a new dimension to the alliance dynamics, especially as TVK positions itself as a significant player ahead of 2026.

The DMK, on its part, is believed to be proceeding cautiously. Having enjoyed decisive victories in recent years, the party is keen to maintain its dominance while accommodating allies in a way that does not dilute its electoral strength. DMK leaders have emphasised alliance unity, but remain non-committal on revising seat offers at this stage, suggesting that final decisions will be taken closer to the elections.
