In connection with the Railways land-for-jobs scam, a Delhi court charged RJD chief Lalu Yadav and his family with corruption and criminal conspiracy on Friday, claiming that they operated as a criminal business.
Special Judge Vishal Gogne stated that the court determined that Lalu Yadav and his family had engaged in a widespread conspiracy “based on reasonable doubt” when he issued the decision about the framing of charges. A appeal for Lalu Yadav and his family’s acquittal was rejected by the court. The court noted that Lalu Yadav’s assistants were identified as co-conspirators in the fraud based on the chargesheet submitted by the CBI, which is looking into the matter.
According to the court, Lalu Yadav and his family operated as a criminal enterprise and were involved in a larger conspiracy, using their public jobs as leverage to purchase properties regardless of their official positions. Additionally, the court declared that 46 of the 98 remaining defendants in the case—including Lalu Yadav and his relatives—would face prosecution.
According to the chargesheet, there was no solid evidence against the remaining 52 accused, thus it likewise ordered their acquittal. Both the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court denied Lalu Yadav’s requests to stop the case’s trial last year.
The case concerns claims made by the CBI that Group D positions were awarded to applicants in exchange for land tracts being sold to Lalu Yadav’s family at throwaway prices while he served as Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009.
The investigation agency claims that a number of job seekers or their family members either gave or sold land in Patna and other places to Yadav family members and businesses associated with them. The CBI has said that the employment were promised in return for these property transactions and that no appropriate hiring procedure was followed. The Yadav family claims the case is politically motivated and has refuted the accusations.
