Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Smriti Mandhana played a defining role in her team’s dramatic triumph in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) final, delivering a match-winning knock despite suffering from a severe bout of flu. Mandhana scored a brilliant 87 runs off 41 balls, steering RCB to chase down a daunting 204-run target set by Delhi Capitals — the highest successful run chase in WPL history.

In the post-match press conference, RCB head coach Malolan Rangarajan revealed that Mandhana had been ill with high fever and flu symptoms ahead of the final but insisted on playing. According to the coach, the batter concealed her discomfort from teammates, displaying immense determination and leadership throughout the high-pressure encounter. “She was seriously unwell with a high fever,” Rangarajan said, praising her commitment and composure under duress.

Mandhana’s innings anchored the chase as RCB steadily clawed their way toward the target, overcoming early pressure and capitalising on scoring opportunities. Her partnership with fellow batter Georgia Voll provided the backbone of the run chase, breaking the back of the Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack and keeping RCB firmly on course.

The victory marked RCB’s second WPL title, reinforcing their position as one of the dominant sides in the league. The win also highlighted Mandhana’s resilience and ability to perform when it mattered most, earning admiration from fans and pundits alike for both her skill and grit. In celebrating the achievement, teammates acknowledged Mandhana’s leadership and the inspirational nature of her performance.
