Azerbaijan Warns of Response After Suspected Iranian Drone Strike Injures Civilians

Azerbaijan has warned it will respond after what it described as a drone strike originating from Iran injured civilians and damaged infrastructure in the country’s western exclave. The incident has heightened tensions in the region amid the wider conflict involving Iran and its adversaries in the Middle East.

According to Azerbaijani authorities, multiple drones entered its airspace and struck areas in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, a region geographically separated from the rest of Azerbaijan and located near the borders with Iran, Armenia and Turkey. One of the drones reportedly hit the premises of Nakhchivan International Airport, causing damage to parts of the facility. Another drone fell near a residential area, leading to injuries among civilians.

Officials said several people were hurt in the incident and were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. While the injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening, the attack caused panic among residents and raised concerns about the safety of critical infrastructure in the region.

The Azerbaijani government strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a violation of its territorial integrity and national sovereignty. Authorities in Baku said an investigation had been launched to determine the exact type of drones used and to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack. In response to the strike, Azerbaijan summoned Iran’s ambassador to lodge a formal protest and demanded an explanation from Tehran. Government officials said the country reserved the right to take “necessary measures” to protect its citizens and territory if such incidents were repeated.

However, Iran rejected the allegations and denied any involvement in the attack. Iranian officials stated that their country does not target neighbouring states and called for a thorough investigation to clarify the situation. Tehran urged against escalating tensions and emphasised the importance of maintaining regional stability. The incident comes at a time when the broader Middle East region is experiencing heightened tensions due to ongoing hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Analysts believe the spillover of such conflicts into neighbouring regions could complicate an already fragile geopolitical environment.

Observers note that Azerbaijan maintains close security and economic ties with Israel, which has at times strained relations with Iran. The latest incident is therefore likely to further complicate diplomatic relations between Baku and Tehran.

Security experts warn that if the situation escalates, it could have wider implications for stability in the South Caucasus. The region plays an important role in energy transportation routes linking Asia and Europe, making any rise in tensions a matter of international concern. Azerbaijani officials have reiterated that protecting national security remains their top priority and said the government will decide its next steps after completing the investigation into the drone strikes.
