International Women’s Day 2026: Date, History, Theme and Importance

International Women’s Day is celebrated across the globe every year on March 8 to honour the achievements, contributions and strength of women in different fields. In 2026, the day will be observed on Sunday, March 8, with several events and campaigns planned worldwide to recognise women’s role in shaping society and to highlight the importance of gender equality.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2026 is “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.” The theme highlights the need to move beyond discussions and take concrete steps to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women everywhere. It calls for collective action from governments, organisations and individuals to address issues such as discrimination, unequal pay, violence against women and lack of access to education and healthcare.
The roots of International Women’s Day date back to the early 20th century when women began demanding better working conditions, fair wages and voting rights. One of the earliest milestones occurred in 1908, when thousands of women workers marched in New York City demanding improved labour rights and suffrage. The concept of a global day dedicated to women was later proposed in 1910 by German activist Clara Zetkin during the International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen. Delegates from several countries supported the idea, leading to the first official celebrations of International Women’s Day in multiple European nations in 1911.
The date of March 8 gained prominence after women in Russia organised protests in 1917 demanding “bread and peace” during World War I. The protest played a significant role in the Russian Revolution and eventually contributed to women gaining the right to vote in the country.
International Women’s Day is now recognised globally as an important occasion to celebrate women’s accomplishments in politics, business, science, sports and the arts. At the same time, it serves as a reminder of the challenges women still face worldwide.
