NCW Issues Summons to Badshah, ‘Tateeree’ Makers Over Obscenity Allegations

The National Commission for Women has summoned rapper Badshah and the team behind the Haryanvi track Tateeree following allegations of obscenity and vulgarity in the song’s content. The move comes after the Commission took suo motu cognisance of complaints and media reports criticising the lyrics and visuals.

In its notice, the Commission directed Badshah, along with directors Mahi Sandhu and Joban Sandhu and producer Hiten, to appear before it on March 25. They have been asked to present relevant documents and clarify their position regarding the controversial track.

The NCW observed that the song’s content appears prima facie objectionable and may violate provisions under several laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. It expressed concern that such content could promote negative stereotypes and undermine the dignity of women.

The controversy erupted soon after the release of Tateeree, which faced backlash on social media and from various organisations for its alleged explicit language and portrayal of women. Critics argued that the song’s visuals and lyrics were inappropriate and could have an adverse impact, particularly on younger audiences.

Amid mounting criticism, the track was subsequently removed from online platforms. Badshah also issued a public apology, stating that there was no intention to offend sentiments or disrespect women. However, the apology did little to quell the controversy, with multiple complaints reportedly filed in different regions. The issue had earlier drawn the attention of the Haryana State Commission for Women, which had taken a strict stance and sought action after the artist failed to appear before it in connection with the matter.
