In an effort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, the Treasury Department said on Thursday that US paper money will soon include President Donald Trump’s signature. The department is getting ready to add the president’s signature—a first for a serving US president—on all new US paper money.

Additionally, for the first time since the system’s inception in 1861, the Treasurer of the United States’ signature has been removed off federal currency, breaking a 165-year tradition. The first $100 bills bearing Trump’s and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s signatures will be printed in June, with further denominations to come in the coming months, according to the Treasury.

Bessent said the initiative reflects what he described as strong economic progress, adding that placing Trump’s name on US currency is a fitting way to commemorate both the nation’s achievements and its 250th anniversary.

“There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial,” Bessent said in a statement released by the US Department of the Treasury.

US Treasurer Brandon Beach also backed the decision, saying the move is “appropriate” and “well deserved.”

Notes with the signatures of US Treasurer Lynn Malerba and former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who worked under President Joe Biden, are still being produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

With Malerba’s signature, an unbroken lineage that dates back to the first issuance of US federal currency in 1861 comes to an end. American banknotes have always featured the Treasurer’s signature for more than 150 years.

A larger effort to praise Trump during the anniversary celebrations coincides with the currency upgrade. As part of the July 4 Semiquincentennial celebrations, a 24-karat gold commemorative coin with his likeness was approved by a federal arts commission earlier this month.
