According to two Middle East officials who spoke to The Associated Press, Iran and the United States have received a draft plan that calls for a 45-day ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in an effort to find a solution to end the conflict.
According to the two officials, the suggestion originates from mediators from Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey who are trying to put an end to the conflict. They expect that the 45-day window will provide the nations ample time to have in-depth discussions and come to a long-term truce.
The plan was delivered late Sunday night to US Middle East ambassador Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, but neither country has replied, according to the authorities. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private negotiations.
Whether the parties would accept such stipulations is still up in the air. Iran has maintained that it won’t stop fighting unless it gets monetary compensation and a guarantee that it won’t be attacked once more. This week, US President Donald Trump has threatened to strike Iranian power plants and bridges.
The director of intelligence for Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard was murdered in an attack on Monday, according to Iranian state media. The Guard accused Israel and the United States of being responsible for the attack. The location of Maj. Gen. Majid Khademi’s death was not specified. However, early on Monday morning, a number of airstrikes targeted residential areas near Tehran, the capital of Iran.
