How a US airman was rescued in a remote area of Iran

In order to save an injured airman who was left alone in a remote mountainous area after his aircraft was shot down two days prior, US special forces undertook a risky operation into Iran on Sunday. Some information about how the US raced against the clock and advancing Iranian spies to locate the officer deep inside hostile terrain has started to surface, even though many aspects are still under wraps.

The airman’s nightmare started on Friday when an F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft was shot down over southwest Iran, marking the first such incidence in over two decades. The two US military soldiers on board ejected, and although the pilot was saved that same day, the second crew member—a weapons operator—became separated and remained stuck in a remote, untamed area.

Swirling rumors that a US airman was lost inside a combat zone were quickly followed by official confirmation.

Iran offered a £50,000 ($66,100) bounty to anyone who discovered him alive, while US planes were spotted flying low over the region on Saturday. Videos posted on social media, which any news agency has not confirmed, seemed to show armed citizens looking. According to US authorities, the airman was carrying a handgun and would have been trained for this scenario, which entails getting to high ground, establishing contacts, hiding, and periodically activating a beacon signal to assist American forces in finding him.

The airman reportedly hid in a mountain fissure and limited the usage of his beacon signal because he was worried Iran may detect it, according to accounts in US media. According to a senior Trump administration official, the CIA was able to pinpoint the airman’s precise location and notified the Pentagon, which would have had to rule out the possibility that the beacon signal was an Iranian trap.

Later, Donald Trump claimed that the injured airman was “being hunted down by our enemies, who were getting closer and closer by the hour” and that his whereabouts were tracked “24 hours a day”.

Additionally, it has been stated that the CIA conducted a deception campaign inside Iran, circulating false information that he had previously been located by US forces.

According to reports, strikes were carried out to keep Iranian troops away from the area as US special forces aboard multiple aircraft approached the trapped officer. However, their exit was not simple.  According to CBS, two C-130 transport aircraft that were supposed to retrieve rescue personnel became stuck in the ground and couldn’t take off from the isolated location in Iran where they had previously landed. According to US officials, it was routine military procedure to destroy them in order to keep them out of hostile hands.

Iran’s military claimed that “a deception and escape mission at an abandoned airport in southern Isfahan…was completely foiled” and that two US C-130 military transport aircraft and two Black Hawk helicopters were destroyed during the operation. However, US officials have refuted these claims.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) troops shot down a US drone over Isfahan on Sunday while it was looking for the missing airman, according to Iranian official media. After being saved, the airman arrived in Kuwait to receive medical care. Despite being “seriously wounded,” Trump declared that he “will be just fine.”The operation has been portrayed as a failure by Iranian officials and the media. According to Ebrahim Zolfaghari, a spokesman for Iran’s primary military command, multiple US military aircraft had to make emergency landings.
