Tensions escalated in Falta on Tuesday after supporters of the All India Trinamool Congress staged protests against an Election Commission-appointed IPS officer, alleging intimidation ahead of the second phase of polling in West Bengal.
The controversy erupted after Ajay Pal Sharma, a 2011-batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, visited the residence and election office of TMC candidate Jahangir Khan.
Protesting party workers gathered outside the premises, raising slogans such as “Jai Bangla” and accusing the officer of overstepping his mandate. Senior TMC leaders and ministers also alleged that the officer’s actions amounted to interference and intimidation of party workers.
Amid the escalating political rhetoric, a TMC leader remarked, “If he’s Singham, I am Pushpa,” invoking popular film characters to challenge the officer’s perceived authority.
The developments come as heightened security measures are being enforced by the Election Commission of India to ensure free and fair polling during the ongoing West Bengal Assembly Election 2026.
Officials have yet to issue a detailed response on the allegations, but the incident underscores the charged political atmosphere in the state as polling progresses.
