Bhabanipur Turns Into Prestige Battleground as Mamata Banerjee Faces Suvendu Adhikari

The high-profile Bhabanipur constituency has once again captured national attention as counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 continues, with a keenly watched contest between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. The seat, located in south Kolkata, is widely regarded as a political stronghold of Banerjee and carries significant symbolic weight in the state’s electoral landscape.

Counting began early in the morning under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, starting with postal ballots and followed by successive rounds of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes. Initial trends pointed to a tightly contested race, with both candidates exchanging leads in the early rounds, reflecting the intensity of the battle.

Bhabanipur has long been associated with Banerjee’s political journey, and her candidature from the seat has made it a focal point of the larger contest between the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A victory here would reinforce her leadership and the party’s dominance in urban Bengal, while a defeat could have far-reaching implications for the TMC’s position in the state.

For the BJP, the stakes are equally high. A win for Adhikari would not only mark a significant breakthrough in Kolkata but also signal the party’s growing influence in regions traditionally dominated by the TMC. The contest is therefore being viewed as a microcosm of the broader political rivalry between the two parties in West Bengal.

Early counting trends have shown narrow margins between the two candidates, keeping both camps on edge. Political observers note that such close contests often see shifts in later rounds as votes from different segments and regions are counted. While the BJP has shown strength in initial rounds across several constituencies in the state, the TMC remains hopeful of gaining ground as counting progresses.

The constituency has witnessed intense campaigning in the run-up to the elections, with both sides mobilising significant resources and grassroots support. Bhabanipur’s electorate, comprising a mix of urban and traditional voters, has historically played a crucial role in shaping electoral outcomes in the region.

Security arrangements have been tightened at counting centres to ensure a smooth and transparent process, with officials closely monitoring each round. Party workers and supporters have gathered outside centres, tracking developments and reacting to every shift in the tally.
