Chinese President Xi Jinping called for stable and responsible relations between China and the United States during a high-profile summit with US President Donald Trump in Beijing, as both leaders attempted to ease tensions surrounding trade, Taiwan, and global security challenges.
The summit, held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, marked one of the most closely watched diplomatic engagements between the two countries in recent years. Trump was welcomed with an elaborate state ceremony, including military honours and an official banquet hosted by Xi, underscoring the significance China attached to the visit.
During the talks, Xi stressed the importance of maintaining a steady and constructive relationship between the world’s two largest economies. He reportedly told Trump to “make it work and never mess it up,” while warning that instability in bilateral ties could have serious consequences for global peace, economic growth, and international cooperation.
Chinese officials described the meeting as an effort to strengthen communication and prevent further deterioration in relations that have been strained by geopolitical rivalry, economic disputes, and security concerns. The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including trade, technology restrictions, regional security, artificial intelligence, and international conflicts.
Taiwan emerged as one of the most sensitive topics during the discussions. Xi reportedly reiterated Beijing’s position that Taiwan remains an inseparable part of China and warned against actions that could escalate tensions in the region. Chinese officials emphasised that mishandling the Taiwan issue could seriously damage ties between Beijing and Washington.
The United States has maintained strategic support and arms sales to Taiwan, a policy strongly opposed by China. The matter has remained a major source of friction between the two countries in recent years.
Trade and economic cooperation also featured prominently in the summit agenda. Both sides explored ways to stabilise commercial ties after months of tariff disputes and restrictions involving advanced technologies and semiconductor exports. Reports suggested China expressed willingness to increase imports from the United States, while Washington considered reviewing certain trade and technology restrictions.
Trump described the talks as productive and expressed confidence about the future of US-China relations. He said cooperation between the two nations could create significant economic opportunities and contribute to global stability despite continuing disagreements on several strategic matters.
Apart from bilateral issues, the leaders also discussed international developments, including tensions in the Middle East, the conflict involving Iran, supply chain security, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Senior government officials and business representatives from both countries participated in sections of the meetings, reflecting the broader economic and diplomatic stakes attached to the summit.
While no major agreements were announced immediately after the talks, observers said the summit signalled a mutual desire to avoid further escalation in relations between the two powers. The meeting is expected to influence future diplomatic and economic engagement between Washington and Beijing, with both governments likely to continue negotiations on trade, technology, and regional security in the coming months.
