IIT Kharagpur Celebrates International Yoga Day with Participation of Over 400 Participants

Kharagpur, West Bengal : Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga with enthusiastic participation from more than 400 students, faculty members, staff and campus residents, reaffirming the Institute’s commitment to holistic health and well-being.
Organised by the Technology Students’ Gymkhana (TSG) at its premises, the event commenced with an address by Prof. Debalay Chakrabarti, President, TSG, followed by an address by Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur. The Director participated in the celebrations alongside the Deans, faculty, staff, students, and members of the campus community. Following a warm-up session, participants performed the Yoga asanas. The programme also featured special performances by young children aged 6–11, whose participation highlighted the universal appeal of yoga across generations. The event concluded with the National Song and the National Anthem.
In the lead-up to International Day of Yoga, IIT Kharagpur had been organising morning yoga sessions from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. since 5 June 2026 for students and members of the campus community. Experts and practitioners from outside the Institute were also invited to deliver lectures and conduct practical sessions.
The celebration resonated with the message of the Prime Minister of India, who observed that the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” is not confined to the elderly but is equally relevant for people of all ages, making yoga a lifelong companion in the pursuit of health, well-being and personal growth.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur, said: “Yoga shows the path from mental well-being to physical well-being, helping individuals nurture harmony between mind and body and inspiring a healthier way of life.”
