Keir Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister, Becoming Sixth Leader to Exit Since Brexit

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, becoming the sixth UK leader to leave office since the 2016 Brexit referendum and bringing an abrupt end to a turbulent period for the Labour government.
Starmer said he would step down as both prime minister and leader of the Labour Party after mounting pressure from within his party and a series of political setbacks. Although he will remain in office temporarily to ensure a smooth transition, the announcement has triggered a leadership contest that could reshape British politics.
The resignation comes less than two years after Starmer led Labour to a sweeping victory in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. At the time, his win was seen as a decisive mandate to restore stability following years of political upheaval and economic challenges.
However, his government struggled to maintain public support. Labour faced disappointing results in local elections and growing criticism over its handling of key policy issues. Internal divisions within the party also deepened as lawmakers expressed concerns about the government’s direction and its ability to counter the rising influence of Reform UK and other opposition groups.
In his resignation statement, Starmer acknowledged the challenges his administration had faced and said he accepted the judgment of his parliamentary colleagues. He stressed that the country’s interests must come first and pledged to cooperate fully during the transition process.
The United Kingdom has witnessed a rapid turnover of leaders over the past decade, with David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and now Starmer all leaving office after grappling with political crises linked directly or indirectly to the consequences of Brexit. Attention is now turning to Labour’s succession race. Former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has emerged as a leading contender to replace Starmer, though several senior party figures are also expected to enter the contest.
